Cryptocurrency is a digital currency secured by
cryptography and typically used as a medium of exchange within a
peer-to-peer digital economic system.
Unlike traditional currencies issued by
central banks, cryptocurrencies operate without intermediaries such as banks or governments. The use of cryptographic techniques makes these systems highly resistant to fraud and counterfeiting, though they are not immune to all risks.
How Cryptocurrencies Work
Most cryptocurrency systems run on a decentralized framework maintained by a distributed network of computers. Each computer that joins the network is called a
node. The network nodes are spread globally, and the issuance and management of cryptocurrency units are based on pre-programmed algorithms and mathematical proofs rather than centralized authority.
Most cryptocurrencies rely on a public distributed
ledger known as a
blockchain, which is an ever-growing list of records that are highly resistant to modification. A blockchain is made of a linear chain of blocks, and in the context of cryptocurrencies, it keeps a permanent record of all confirmed transactions secured by cryptographic techniques.
The first cryptocurrency was
Bitcoin, introduced in 2009 by a pseudonymous developer or group known as
Satoshi Nakamoto. Nakamoto aimed to create an electronic payment system that would allow digital financial transactions without intermediaries. Since then, thousands of alternative cryptocurrencies have been created, each with particular features and use cases.
Why Cryptocurrencies Matter
Cryptocurrencies can offer an alternative to traditional financial systems by enabling direct, borderless transactions between users. They can potentially reduce transaction costs, increase financial access for unbanked populations, and provide greater transparency through public ledgers.
Each cryptocurrency works in a particular way, resulting in varying degrees of decentralization. Some cryptocurrencies may be considered more decentralized than others, depending on their network structure and how nodes are distributed.
