What Is a Decentralized Application (DApp)?

A decentralized application (DApp) is a software application that runs on a blockchain network instead of centralized servers, using smart contracts to operate autonomously without a single controlling authority.

How DApps Work

DApps combine a frontend user interface with a backend built on blockchain technology. The backend logic is encoded in smart contracts, which are self-executing programs stored on the blockchain. These contracts automatically enforce the application’s rules, such as transferring funds, recording ownership, or validating transactions.
Users interact with DApps through a crypto wallet, which serves as their identity and signing tool. There’s typically no need to create an account or share personal information. This approach gives users more direct control over their data and reduces reliance on intermediaries that often collect and monetize user information.
DApps also tend to be open-source, meaning developers can inspect, audit, and contribute to the codebase. This encourages community participation in the application's development and governance.

DApp Examples

DApps span a range of categories across the Web3 ecosystem. Three common examples include:

Decentralized Finance (DeFi)

DApps in the DeFi space allow users to lend, borrow, trade, and earn interest on cryptocurrencies without traditional intermediaries like banks. These platforms can provide financial services to people who may not have access to conventional banking.

Gaming

Blockchain-based gaming DApps let players own and trade in-game assets as tokens, participate in provably fair competitions, and earn rewards. These applications create transparent economies where players have verifiable ownership of digital items.

Governance and voting

DApps can facilitate decentralized governance through decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs), where participants vote on proposals and collectively govern the direction of a project. Voting records are stored on-chain, providing a transparent and auditable process.
