Bitcoin is a decentralized digital currency that runs on a
peer-to-peer network of computers without relying on banks or governments.
Created in 2009 by an anonymous developer or group known as
Satoshi Nakamoto, Bitcoin was the first
cryptocurrency and remains the largest by market capitalization. It enables borderless transactions through
blockchain technology, which records every transaction on a shared public ledger maintained by a distributed network of
nodes.
How Bitcoin Works
Bitcoin transactions are verified by network participants called miners, who use computational power to solve cryptographic puzzles. This process, known as
mining, adds new blocks of transactions to the Bitcoin blockchain approximately every 10 minutes. Miners who successfully add a block receive newly issued bitcoins as a reward, which is how new Bitcoin enters circulation. The first block, called the
genesis block, was mined on January 3, 2009.
Bitcoin uses a
proof-of-work consensus mechanism, which requires miners to expend computational energy to validate transactions and secure the network. This energy-intensive design helps make the Bitcoin network resistant to tampering and fraud, as altering past transactions would require controlling the majority of the network computing power.
The total supply of Bitcoin is capped at 21 million coins, with approximately 20 million already in circulation as of 2026. This fixed supply is one reason Bitcoin is sometimes described as a
scarce digital asset. New bitcoins are issued at a decreasing rate through a process called
halving, which reduces the mining reward by half approximately every four years.
The Bitcoin protocol is
open source, and its original client software was rebranded to Bitcoin Core in 2014 to distinguish the protocol from the currency. Bitcoin Core is maintained by a global community of contributors who review and propose changes to the codebase. Anyone can review the code, suggest improvements, or run a full node to participate independently in validating transactions and maintaining the network.

Bitcoin was designed to provide an alternative to traditional financial systems by allowing direct transfers between users without intermediaries. Transactions are recorded on a public
ledger that anyone can verify, reducing the need to trust third parties. This peer-to-peer structure means that no single entity controls the network, and changes to the protocol require broad agreement among participants.
