BNB
Update shuda Aug 13, 2026 What is BNB?
BNB is the native cryptocurrency of the
BNB Chain ecosystem, originally launched in 2017 through an initial coin offering. It functions as a utility token for blockchain operations and
decentralized applications (DApps).
BNB was first introduced through an
ICO held between June 26 and July 3, 2017. The token sale offered 100 million BNB, roughly half of the initial 200 million total supply, at an issue price of approximately 0.10-0.15 USD per token. Initially created as an
ERC-20 token on the
Ethereum network, BNB has since migrated to its own native BNB Chain infrastructure.
How BNB Works
BNB serves as the native asset of the BNB Chain, a community-driven blockchain network where participants can become validators by staking BNB. The token is used to pay for transaction fees on the network and to interact with
cryptocurrency-based DApps and
decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols built on the chain.
BNB Chain uses a proof-of-staked-authority consensus mechanism, which combines elements of
proof of stake and
proof of authority to achieve fast transaction
finality and lower fees compared to some other blockchain networks.
Token Supply and Burns
The initial total supply of BNB was 200 million tokens. Through a regular quarterly auto-burn mechanism, BNB Chain progressively reduces the circulating supply. As of Q3 2026, 36 quarterly burns have been completed, bringing the total supply down to approximately 133 million tokens. The auto-burn system adjusts the burn amount based on the price of BNB and the number of blocks produced on the network, aiming to gradually reduce supply until 100 million tokens remain.
Use Cases and Ecosystem
BNB has several utility functions within the BNB Chain ecosystem:
Pay for transaction fees on the BNB Chain network
Engage with DApps and games built on BNB Chain
Stake as a network validator to help secure the blockchain
Participate in token launch events hosted on BNB Chain platforms
The
BNB Chain 2026 roadmap focuses on throughput improvements, expanding AI infrastructure through the BNBAgent SDK, and adding privacy features for token transfers and smart contracts. These developments aim to strengthen the network's position for enterprise integration and real-world asset tokenization.
