What Is a Masternode?

A masternode is a specialized node on a blockchain network that performs extra functions beyond basic transaction relay.ย

Running it typically requires a minimum amount of the network's coin staked as collateral and in return, masternode operators receive a share of block rewards and, on many networks, voting rights in protocol governance.

How Does a Masternode Work?

Running a masternode generally involves locking a defined collateral amount, operating a continuously available server, and providing services the network requires. The collateral usually remains under the operator's control but must stay untouched, as spending or moving it can take the masternode offline.

Dash is the best-known example: a Dash masternode requires 1,000 DASH held as collateral and supports features such as InstantSend and ChainLocks, alongside governance voting. PIVX, another masternode network, requires 10,000 PIVX.ย

Reward rates vary by network, block subsidy, number of active masternodes, and uptime, so expected returns are best treated as variable rather than fixed.

How Does a Masternode Differ From a Regular Node?

A regular node validates transactions and blocks, supporting the network without earning rewards. A masternode performs those same duties plus additional services, such as instant transactions, privacy features, or governance functions, and is compensated with a share of block rewards.ย

The collateral requirement is what separates the two: regular nodes have no minimum stake, while masternodes require operators to commit a meaningful amount of the network's coin.

What Are the Risks of Running a Masternode?

Running a masternode does not mean a guaranteed income.ย

The amount of collateral required is high and exposed to the price volatility of the underlying coin. Hosting, maintenance, and monitoring costs can all reduce net returns. Downtime or misconfiguration can make a node ineligible for payments, and reward structures can change through network upgrades.ย

Anyone considering running a masternode should review the project's official documentation and current network parameters before committing funds.
