What Is Latency?

Latency in computing refers to the time delay between an input and the resulting output. It exists at every level of a system, from the input and output (IO) delay between a user and a device to the network delay as data travels between computers and servers across the world.

In cryptocurrencies, latency usually refers to two distinct delays: the latency within a blockchain network, and the latency on a trading platform. Lower latency generally means a faster, more responsive system.

Latency in Blockchain Networks

Blockchain network latency is the time between submitting a transaction to a network and its first confirmation. After this initial confirmation, the transaction tends to become more final as additional blocks are added on top of it.ย 

For a payment system that aims for broad adoption, low network latency can be important. If the gap between paying at a checkout and confirming that payment grows too long, it may create friction for users.

Network latency can vary with factors such as block times, network congestion, and transaction fees. During periods of heavy activity, transactions may wait longer to be included in a block, which effectively increases the delay a user experiences.

Latency on Crypto Exchanges

The latency of an exchange measures how quickly it can process and execute large volumes of transactions in its order book. Many day traders use bots to automate a large share of their activity, placing and canceling many orders every second.

An exchange with low latency and high throughput can process these orders quickly, allowing automated strategies to respond to price movements in a timely way. An exchange with high latency, by contrast, may process orders with a delay relative to the evolving market price. This can lead to orders being filled at unexpected prices and may cause traders to miss opportunities.

Latency is especially relevant for high-frequency trading, where strategies depend on executing many orders within very short timeframes. Even small delays can meaningfully affect outcomes for these participants.

Whether on a blockchain or a trading platform, latency shapes how responsive a system feels and how reliably it behaves under load. Understanding the sources of delay can help users set realistic expectations about confirmation times and order execution, and it highlights why scalability and performance remain active areas of development across the crypto industry.
