What Is an Airdrop?

An airdrop is the distribution of digital assets, typically free of charge, to selected wallet addresses to promote a project or reward its community.

In the cryptocurrency and blockchain ecosystem, an airdrop refers to the distribution of digital assets to the public, either by virtue of holding a certain other token or simply by being an active wallet address on a particular blockchain.

This is separate and distinct from the allocation of tokens or coins that happens via an initial coin offering (ICO). During ICOs, the digital asset being offered is typically purchased using an alternate coin or token. In the case of airdrops, there is no purchase required from the recipient, meaning that the assets are distributed for free.

Why Do Projects Use Airdrops?

Airdrops are often used as a marketing tool to raise awareness of the coin or token being distributed, as well as a method of diversifying the number of holders of that asset. The benefits of a project carrying out an airdrop can be summarized as follows:

  • Creating hype

Airdrop announcements themselves can quickly capture users’ attention in a crowded crypto market, possibly spurring them to do more research into the project and decide if it’s worth investing in. Airdrop campaigns can also create brand legitimacy.

  • Rewarding early adopters

Users who have been following a project from its inception can be rewarded through airdrops: this fosters loyalty and can encourage them to stay and support the project’s long-term growth.

  • Achieving decentralization

Spreading tokens across a wide range of independent wallets can support a more decentralized ownership structure. When most tokens sit with a few founders or investors, this may invite regulatory scrutiny, causing users to lose confidence in the project.

  • Boosting liquidity

When users receive tokens, they may immediately trade, stake, or provide liquidity for them. High initial trading volume and a large holder count can make it easier for the project to negotiate listings on major cryptocurrency exchanges.

How Do Users Qualify for Airdrops?

To be eligible for receiving airdrops, users typically must hold a certain amount of the asset in a public wallet at the time of the snapshot, which is taken as a view of the current state of the blockchain at that particular point in time.

Today, many projects measure sustained participation over periods of 60 to 90 days or longer, apply behavioral scoring based on wallet relationships and funding sources, and use points-based campaigns spanning multiple distribution seasons.

For specific programs such as Binance HODLer Airdrops, which rewards users retroactively, snapshots of user balances and total pool balances will be taken multiple times at any point of time each hour to get users’ hourly average balances. These are then used to calculate user rewards and eligible users will receive HODLer Airdrops rewards in their Spot Accounts after the official airdrops announcements have been made.
Users are advised to monitor official Binance announcements for airdrop eligibility and snapshot dates, and users must also complete account verification (KYC) and be from an eligible jurisdiction to participate in HODLer Airdrops.
