What Is HODL?

HODL is a slang term in the cryptocurrency community for holding digital assets long-term rather than selling during price swings.

The term is commonly used during periods of market decline, when investors refuse to sell their coins despite falling prices. HODL was later retrofitted as a backronym for "Hold On for Dear Life," reflecting the mindset of staying invested through strong market volatility.

How HODL Originated

HODL originated from a spelling mistake by a user named GameKyuubi on the BitcoinTalk forum in December 2013. In a thread titled "I AM HODLING," GameKyuubi wrote about holding Bitcoin during a price crash, admitting to being a bad trader who was better off holding than attempting short-term trades.

The post contained the now-famous passage:

I type d that tyitle twice because I knew it was wrong the first time. Still wrong. w/e. GF's out at a lesbian bar, BTC crashing WHY AM I HOLDING? I'LL TELL YOU WHY. It's because I'm a bad trader and I KNOW I'M A BAD TRADER.

The misspelling quickly spread across cryptocurrency communities and became a rallying cry for long-term holders. It is most frequently used during a bear market, when investors hold their positions despite declining prices.
The term has also inspired similar misspelled crypto community slang, such as BUIDL, which refers to building and developing blockchain projects rather than focusing solely on price movements.

How HODL Compares to Other Strategies

HODL is essentially the cryptocurrency equivalent of the buy-and-hold investment strategy from traditional finance. Rather than actively trading through scalping, day trading, or swing trading, HODLers take a passive approach based on the belief that their chosen assets may appreciate over a long period.
The strategy requires emotional discipline, as cryptocurrency markets are known for significant price volatility. HODLers aim to avoid selling at a loss during downturns and hold through market cycles. This approach may reduce the impact of short-term volatility on a portfolio, though it also means forgoing potential gains from active trading.
It is important to note that HODLing is distinct from staking, lending, or participating in decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols.
