Higher gas prices incentivize validators to process a transaction more quickly. During periods of low network activity, standard gas prices are usually sufficient. When the network is congested, paying a higher gas price may help a transaction get confirmed faster.
Today, Ethereum mainnet gas prices have dropped dramatically compared to previous years. Average gas prices hover around 0.15 to 0.5 gwei, making basic ETH transfers cost under $0.03. This decline reflects the shift of most user activity to Layer 2 networks, which now process roughly 95% of Ethereum transactions.
Despite these improvements, gas fees remain a necessary part of how blockchain networks function. They prevent a waste of resources by making every operation cost something and ensuring that validators are compensated for what they contribute to maintaining the network.
