What Is CZ's Number 4?

CZ's Number 4 is a shorthand reference popularized by Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) to signal ignoring FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt), fake news, and attacks directed at Binance or the wider cryptocurrency industry.

Origin of the Number 4

On January 2, 2023, CZ posted a series of New Year's resolutions on Twitter (now X). The post listed three "do's" focused on education, compliance, and improving products and services. The fourth item, a "don't," was to ignore FUD, fake news, and attacks. CZ encouraged the community to reference this original post whenever he subsequently posted just the number "4" as a standalone reply or statement.

Following the initial post, CZ began using "4" as a concise response to negative news or rumors. He occasionally accompanied the number with a photo of himself signing the number four with his fingers.

How the Number 4 Became a Crypto Meme

Over time, the number "4" evolved beyond a personal shorthand for CZ into a recognizable community symbol. Binance supporters and crypto enthusiasts began using "4" in social media replies to express solidarity or to signal that a particular news item or rumor should be treated with skepticism.

On January 3, 2025, CZ posted about the number “4” again, explaining its origin and linking to the original post made in 2023.

Number 4 in Today’s Context

The “4” meme has stayed current in 2026. Crypto community members still treat "4" as a motto meaning "focus on building, ignore the noise," and CZ continues to use it when he believes media coverage about Binance or the market is inaccurate.

Over time, the reply spread beyond CZ's own account. Traders, project teams, and casual followers post "4" on X and other social platforms to dismiss claims they consider false or exaggerated.

The term also shows how crypto communities compress meaning into symbols. A single digit carries a shared history: the original 2023 resolution, the four-finger photos, and years of replies. For newcomers, recognizing "4" and similar shorthand, such as HODL or WAGMI, makes it easier to follow community discussions without misreading playful replies as official statements. What started as one line in a New Year post has become part of crypto culture.

Why It Matters for Beginners

If you see a bare "4" in a reply thread, you can typically read it as an expression of: "this claim is FUD, ignore it." However, remember that it’s not a price prediction, a product code, or a trading signal. It is a cultural cue that marks the poster as tuned in to crypto community norms.

It’s also worth remembering that FUD is a label, not proof either way. A post that has many "4" replies may mean that it’s possibly spreading misinformation, but the label itself does not verify or debunk anything. Always conduct your own research: check primary sources, such as official announcements, whitepapers, or on-chain data, instead of relying on a meme reply. Treat "4" as a starting point for your own judgment, not as a substitute for it.
