What Is Proof of Stake (PoS)?

Proof of stake (PoS) is a consensus mechanism in which blockchain validators are chosen to create new blocks based on how much crypto they lock up as a stake.
Staking refers to validators committing funds to the network. Validators can only produce new blocks if they lock up their funds first, which serve as collateral. Dishonest behavior can cause validators to lose part of their stake and be removed from the network, while honest validators are rewarded for attesting and proposing new blocks. In this way, a PoS blockchain reaches distributed consensus based on the economic stake that validators commit.

How Does Proof of Stake Work?

Proof of stake was designed as an alternative to proof of work (PoW). On PoW blockchains like Bitcoin, validators (miners) compete to solve a cryptographic puzzle, and the winner adds the next block. This process is secure but requires significant computing power and energy.

In contrast, PoS selects validators based on factors such as stake size and, in some designs, how long the coins have been staked. Most implementations also add a randomization element so that validators take turns creating blocks. Because PoS only requires minimal computing power, validators can help secure the network using ordinary machines rather than specialized mining hardware. This can support greater energy efficiency and broader participation.

The best-known example is Ethereum, which moved from proof of work to proof of stake in September 2022 in an event known as The Merge. Currently, roughly 35% of the total ETH supply is staked, and the network relies on hundreds of thousands of validators to reach consensus. This shift significantly reduced Ethereum energy use compared with its previous PoW design.

Why Proof of Stake Matters

Proof of stake matters because it offers a lower-energy way to secure a blockchain while still discouraging dishonest behavior through economic penalties like slashing. For everyday users, staking can make network participation more accessible, since it doesn’t require expensive mining equipment. Many networks also let smaller holders join staking pools, so they can contribute a portion of the stake instead of running a full validator alone.
Alongside the standard model, there are variations such as leased proof of stake (LPoS) and delegated proof of stake (DPoS). Some networks, such as Conflux, use a combined PoW and PoS design that blends features of both approaches. Each variation makes different trade-offs between decentralization, speed, and security.
