What Is Gwei?

Gwei is a small denomination of ether (ETH), the native currency of the Ethereum blockchain, equal to one-billionth of one ETH.
Along with ETH, gwei is one of the most commonly used denominations of Ethereum's cryptocurrency. It is particularly relevant when discussing gas, which is the pricing mechanism used on the Ethereum network to calculate transaction fees and smart contract operation costs.

Specifically, one unit of gwei is defined as one-billionth (one nano) of an ether. So 1 gwei equals 0.000000001 or 10e-9 ETH. Conversely, 1 ETH equals one billion (10e9) gwei. This relationship makes gwei a practical unit for expressing small amounts of ether that would otherwise require many decimal places when written in ETH directly.

How Gwei Is Used

Gwei is most commonly used to express gas prices on the Ethereum network. When a user initiates a transaction or executes a smart contract, they pay a fee in gas, which is denominated in gwei. The gas price fluctuates based on network demand, with higher demand typically leading to higher gwei prices. For example, during periods of heavy network congestion, gas prices may rise to dozens or even hundreds of gwei per unit of gas. Conversely, during quieter periods, gas prices may fall to just a few gwei per unit.

To understand why gwei is practical, consider an analogy with the US dollar. Gwei functions like coins (cents) while ETH functions like dollar bills. For small transactions, it’s easier to refer to prices in gwei rather than in fractions of ETH. This makes gwei especially handy when measuring small values, which is why it is widely used when calculating gas prices.

Although less common, gwei may sometimes be referred to as Shannon, NanoEther, or Nano. The term Shannon refers to the mathematician and cryptographer Claude Shannon, who is known as the father of information theory. These alternative names are rarely used in practice, but they may appear in technical documentation or older discussions about Ethereum gas pricing.

Gwei and Ethereum Denominations

There are several other denominations of ether, each representing a multiple of wei (the smallest unit of ETH). The table below shows how gwei fits within the full denomination system.
