Key Takeaways

  • SolScan is a dedicated blockchain explorer for the Solana ecosystem, giving you access to a variety of blockchain data, including transaction history, wallet addresses, contracts, and much more.

  • There are dedicated DeFi and NFT dashboards and an analytics platform, which provide insights into token trends and tools for monitoring DeFi activity on the Solana network.

  • SolScan offers API access in order to fetch blockchain data such as crypto transactions, blocks, and validator information, enabling integration into custom applications.

Introduction

Transparency is one of the core principles behind blockchain technology, and it may be a primary reason for its growing adoption in many industries. Public blockchains are distributed databases that have all transactions and data publicly available. This openness ensures accountability and allows users to track activity in real time.

In practice, blockchain explorers are essential tools for accessing this public blockchain data, allowing users to monitor transactions, explore market trends, analyze smart contract interactions, and much more.

Solana is a popular blockchain network that offers a wide variety of use cases and products, including cryptocurrencies, NFTs, decentralized exchanges (DEXs), and various types of decentralized applications (DApps). Like BscScan for BNB Chain and EtherScan for Ethereum, Solana also has a dedicated block explorer called SolScan.

In this article, we will discuss what SolScan is and explore some of the many dashboards and tools it has to offer.

What Is SolScan?

SolScan is a blockchain explorer specifically designed for the Solana network. You can think of it as a search engine that allows you to explore everything related to the Solana blockchain. SolScan gives you access to a range of information, including transaction history, wallet addresses, smart contracts, and analytical insights into token and decentralized finance (DeFi) projects.

SolScan is free and an alternative to Solana Explorer. Its relatively user-friendly interface allows you to navigate its tools and resources. Let's start by familiarizing ourselves with SolScan's homepage. If you are familiar with EtherScan, you will notice that they share some common layout features.

solscan homepage

The search bar is at the top of the homepage. You can use it to search for things like transaction hashes, wallet addresses, tokens, NFT collections, smart contract addresses, and block numbers.

solscan search bar

You will find the navigation tabs on the top of the SolScan homepage. These give you quick and easy access to the tools and resources that SolScan has to offer. These include analytical tools and dashboards, DeFi dashboards, blockchain data, technical resources, and leaderboards for tokens and NFTs. You can also sign in or sign up for enhanced functionality.

Now that you are familiar with the fundamentals of the SolScan interface let's look further into what the explorer has to offer.

How to Find Transactions on SolScan

Finding transaction information on SolScan is a relatively straightforward process. Using the correct hash or address gives you information about timestamps, fees, status, and accounts involved in the transaction.

1. Every Solana transaction is recorded on the Solana mainnet with a unique transaction signature (also referred to as transaction ID). A signature is a long string of numbers and letters that looks like this:

RCvW5vKvhBFS5UGSsUyXs5zdw9FCgrqvJkMCgYhXj6Qcaa5idQ5AaArSkW3aQMZUavqnX4LDG3oa558wr6SU4sU

2. You can access transaction information by copying the signature and pasting it in the SolScan search bar.

3. After hitting enter, you will arrive on the Transaction Details page. This page gives you information about the specific transaction you’ve searched for. You can browse three categories: Overview, SOL Balance Change, and Token Balance Change.

solscan transaction details

4. The Overview page will provide most of the information you need about the signature, timestamp, status, signer, and overall block data. By scrolling down, you can also find fee information, the previous block hash, and the program logs.

5. The SOL Balance Change and Token Balance Change tabs provide information on the balance changes for all parties involved.

The SOL Balance Change page will help you understand who sent and received SOL.

The Token Balance Change page will help you understand which wallets sent or received specific tokens.

Now that you know how to find transactions on SolScan, let's review some of the important terms you might find on the Transaction Details dashboard (in order of appearance).

Signature

Each transaction is uniquely assigned an alphanumeric string, an identifier similar to Ethereum’s Transaction Hash or TxID.

Block

The block number in which a transaction was processed. These numbers are sequential and indicate a transaction’s placement within the blockchain’s history.

Timestamp

The timestamp associated with the block in which a transaction was processed.

Result

The transaction’s confirmation status.

Signer

The wallet address that initiated the transaction.

Transaction Actions

Breakdown of transactions into one or multiple transfers.

Summary Mode

Provides a condensed, high-level overview of transaction information.

Fee

The fees paid for the transaction.

Priority Fee

The optional fee paid to speed up the transaction processing time.

Compute Units Consumed

The total amount of computational resources utilized by a specific transaction on the Solana network.

Previous Block Hash

The alphanumeric hash to identify the previous block.

Instruction Details

A detailed log of the transaction’s actions.

Program Logs

A detailed log of the instructions/actions results.

How to Find Wallets on SolScan

Similar to transactions, SolScan can be used to track and monitor crypto wallets (also referred to as Accounts). You can find an overview of transactions and smart contract interactions of any specific wallet. To do this, you can use a wallet address.

1. An address will be shorter than a signature but it still consists of a string of numbers and letters. Here is an example of a wallet address:

8AumJGmUjvR4ocbADiWVZuKJny9nSzhqjLatvNahu3iF

2. Copy and paste the wallet address into the search bar and press enter to learn more about it.

3. You will arrive on the Account page, which gives you an overview of balances, tokens held, and the wallet's transaction history.

How to Find Tokens on SolScan

SolScan can be used to verify tokens quickly, providing a complete overview of their details, including their current market performance.

1. Similar to wallet addresses, you can look for tokens using addresses consisting of numbers and letters. When someone asks you the smart contract address of a token, this is what they are referring to. Here is the token contract address of the Raydium (RAY) token:

4k3Dyjzvzp8eMZWUXbBCjEvwSkkk59S5iCNLY3QrkX6R

2. As with transactions and wallets, you can paste the token address into the search bar and hit enter.

solscan find token

3. After hitting enter, you should see the token overview page. Below, we have information about the Raydium token. At a glance, the Market Overview section will give you an insight into how a token is performing.

4. The page also contains other resources, including transaction data, information on DeFi activities, holder data, market data, and token analytics.

As shown below, the Markets tab will give you an overview of the token’s available markets and trading activity.

solscan token markets

The DeFi Activities tab will highlight the token’s usage and general involvement in the DeFi ecosystem, showing the most recent transactions first.

On the left side, you will find the transaction signatures, followed by their timestamp and transaction type (Action). In the middle, you can see the accounts that initiated each transaction, followed by the amount and value. On the right side, you can see the DEX or platform used.

The Analytics tab is a quick and easy way to get an overview of the token’s performance history and trends. Note that you can select a specific time period from the menu available in the top right corner of each graph.

solscan token analytics

The Analytics tab can be helpful if you want to quickly visualize token transfers, distribution, or price for a select period. Below, we can see the token distribution by holder and price over the last seven days.
